How to Update the Banner Image

Posted on | October 27, 2009 | 47 Comments

I get a lot of questions about adjusting the banner image and I figured it was time for me to write a post about it.

The easiest way to change it is to upload a new image into the theme images folder with the same name as the existing banners. If you don’t change the height, then that’s all you need to do. If you look in the images folder for the theme, you’ll see the images listed below.

  • banner.jpg – home and post pages
  • banner1.jpg – regular/navigation pages
  • banner2.jpg – category pages

The only thing you want to watch out for is if you have to change the dimensions of the image. Height is ok to change, but changing the width is going to give you problems. If you need to change the height, you’ll need to modify the CSS. Look for this:

#banner { background: url("images/banner.jpg") no-repeat; height:134px; }

#banner1 { background: url("images/banner1.jpg") no-repeat; height:134px; }

#banner2 { background: url("images/banner2.jpg") no-repeat; height:134px; }

Just change the height to whatever your new image is.

That should get you all squared away.

    Great info. Can a banner image help with SEO? Or do the search engines only see an image?

    how does search engine see the banner image by just reading its Alt text?

    @Debt Settlement leads
    Search engines don’t “see” images. The only benefit an image has (for search engines) is with alt text.

    Thanks for the info. Yep, its that alt tag that carries the power for the image, we also name the images properly too, and get them indexed for image searches.

    Thanks for this info. I was having problems adjusting the dimensions of my banner and couldn’t figure out why. so thank you for letting me know not to adjust the width.

    Hi there. I am just installing your theme, and it’s been a great addition. One question, though. How do I change the “About” and “Subscribe to this feed” areas on the home page?

    I just downloaded your theme (I’m new to wordpress and html, etc, etc!) I was trying to add a background image to be on the right and left hand side of the page – but everytime I add the image url it makes the image appear across the whole web page (except the wrap & masthead). Can you help me figure it out? Thanks!

    is there any way of removing the verticle line at the top of the page too?

    The theme is great. A few minor suggestions:
    - I added the author name/link on both the homepage and article page. I also added an edit button (seems weird to leave this out!)

  12. Josh
    December 6th, 2009 @ 4:01 am

    Oh…and there’s no link to this site! I added that, too!

    I didn’t like the huge amount of vertical space between posts, so I changed the padding from 42 to 0, but that moved the top post on the homepage (and the post on every sub page) right underneath the banner, so there’s no elegant way to control the distance between the banner and the top posts. This is what I did on the homepage (the break tags line op the top post with the right two columns):

    <a href="” rel=”bookmark”>

  14. Josh
    December 6th, 2009 @ 3:35 pm

    code seems to have not transferred:

    <a href="” rel=”bookmark”>

    So did you get it all figured out? It looks like you might have. Big space between banner and first post, but small space between each post.

    Let me know if you still need assistance.

    I am using thiis lovely theme but I get problems with photos, they don’t go to the right side, always on the left even if I upload them on the right or if I align right them….Thanks for your help.

    Also, I have been using the theme for two weeks and the banner would perfectly appear but just yesterday until now I don’t see it :D

    You should be able to align the image to the right by adding the class to the image.

    Not sure what’s up with your banner. If it used to work I would say to look back at your last couple of edits to see if something has changed.

    ‘Search engines don’t “see” images. The only benefit an image has (for search engines) is with alt text.’

    Exactly, but you cannot ad al text to a background image.

    @Fabio Brolesi

    I used a photoshop brush plugin for the paint splatters.

    My nested pages aren’t showing up under their Parent pages in the navigation.

    Any ideas why its not working? Is this even possible in your theme?

    Not a banner question perse but I am having trouble with image sizes. When I choose “medium” it’s too small – around 300 – so I went in and changed the default settings in Media settings to a bit bigger (around 400). I saved the changes and then went to upload another picture but the “medium” setting is gives is still the smaller one. What can I do?

    Why does your theme not include the author name on the post? You have “posted on” for the date, but no posted by or author name. I tried adding it, but did not work well at all. Any advice on that? Thanks

    trying to add a different background color to be on the right and left hand side of the page – how/can I do this in this great theme??

  31. Drew Stauffer
    February 18th, 2010 @ 9:34 am

    The paint splatter is a Photoshop brush. I don’t remember which one exactly, but it was from http://www.brusheezy.com/

    Nested pages aren’t going to show up with this theme without some extra code. I’d find a theme that does do it and them implement into this theme.

    You can easily add in the authors name if you’d like. Check out the Wordpress Codex for the php code.

    The about and subscribe sections are hard coded in the sidebar files. Open them up and you’ll be able to edit the content.

    All of the colors are in the CSS file. You’ll need to add a background color to what ever element you want to adjust.

    hi again! Is it possible to change the width of the main blog post and sidebars? I’d like to post photos that are 500 in width… :D so that would be plus 30px for the main and less 30px on each sidebars…

    Still, the photos do not go the right or center :(

    Thanks again for your help!

    Great theme and I hope to use it for a new site.

    Are you limited to 3 banners total and to linking them to categories?

    Is there a way I could have one per page?

    Once again, I have to give you props on your theme. I have found a shortage of minimalist themes that look good and function well. I have modified your theme into two of my sites and love it. I use it as a base for several templates. Thanks again for putting in the effort to create something for everyone.

    Hi Drew,
    Thanks for the beautiful theme, i love it. I just installed it on my website.
    This is not a banner question, but I was wondering if it’s possible to put a small photo in the far right hand column, for example under the About. I like how this looks on my friend’s blog http://www.ameliabeamer.com/, but can’t see how i can do it.
    thanks again,

    Hello Drew Stauffer!

    Thank you so much for this wonderful theme–I absolutely love it. I have tweaked it a little with the help of a graphic artist person (mainly the header), and have a question for you.

    I want to make the buttons at the top of the page pop (the Home, About, Contact), and would love to have rectangular boxes (in the color of my website header, which is a green) with white font. My graphics person cannot figure out how to do this. Do you know how to do this? Is there a way to do it?

    Thank you!
